The line was out the door at High Street Wine Co’s grand opening last week at the Pearl. Advanced-level sommelier Scott Ota made the rounds at his new place, happily explaining his penchant for small labels and value pricing. His job posting says it all: “High Street…aims to be the educational epicenter for wine in the city.” Big talk in a city that is coming on strong epicurially, but Ota knows his way around a bottle—not only did he crush the 3-day exam to get his advanced somm lapel pin, but he was named by Wine & Spirits magazine as one of the country’s six best somms in 2014. Plus Ota is as approachable and interesting as the wine he is pouring.
Pick up a bottle from High Street’s carefully curated cellar to take home, or drink one of the reasonably priced wines by the glass—30 or so priced between $4 and $12—in the bar or on the patio. Bettter yet, take a glass to go—yes, you can—thanks to the Pearl neighborhood’s oenophile-friendly zoning.
